You can run AFP2web standalone in batch mode or use the SDK to tightly integrate AFP2web into your existing applications.

You use AFP2web to:

  • Split an AFP print data stream into individual documents as you need it
  • Convert a print document to a preferred format for archival or distribution
  • Define how to re-use information in the print data stream

When you work with  AFP print data , you do the following:

Provide additional AFP resources: AFP resources (such as Formdefs, Overlays, Page Segments) can either delivered in the AFP data stream or provided as external resources.

Define how to split documents in AFP standard spools: AFP2web provides a standard method for processing document identification, -splitting and -indexing using standard AFP index elements. You can, however, use the Scripting Facility to freely customize this processing.

Scripting Facility – The key to your information

The Scripting Facility is the interface which you can use to customize AFP2web document processing.

AFP2web parses the input document and makes all document objects available when using the Scripting Facility. You formulate your document processing rules in script modules.

To use the Scripting Facility, all you need to do is activate the Scripting Facility and tell AFP2web to use your document processing rules.

SDK – Integrate AFP2web in your applications.

AFP2web2 can be started directly in batch mode. AFP2web also provides a Source Development Kit (SDK) for either C or Java, which you use to tightly integrate AFP2web into your existing applications.

The AFP2web SDK includes functionality for starting the AFP2web transformation engine and handling input and output data streams to meet any desired application scenario.

1. Efficiently archive your documents.

This is the scenario for an automated conversion, indexing and archival of documents. The process runs in batch mode and processes mass print data. The conversion process must run smoothly, efficiently, reliably, and must produce high-quality conversion results.

The document archival process is a workflow, which interfaces with AFP2web to convert the documents for archival. The steps of this process include:

  • AFP data generation
  • AFP data transfer (via FTP)
  • AFP2web document conversion
  • Document archival on the document server
  • Delivery of  a technical document ID
  • Update of the index database with document metadata
  • Association with the technical document ID

AFP2web not only delivers excellent conversion quality. AFP2web can also be used as a central data extraction utility for standard AFP indexes. Moreover, the AFP2web Scripting Facility can be used to fine-tune the data extraction for any type of information in the document. The Scripting Facility can be used as a link for follow-on processing, for example in document-oriented work flows.

2. Display your documents independently.

The goal is to display individual AFP documents on request in a front-end Web browser. The desired format is PDF delivering a true 1:1 rendition of the original AFP document.

AFP2web is used, for example, as a component in a three-tier application, typically in an Internet application.

Controlled by a Java servlet, AFP2web reads the AFP document from the input buffer and writes the PDF document to the output buffer.

AFP2web avoids file IOs, works with in-memory data streams, and is thus optimized for quick processing. The efficiency and the high quality conversion make it possible to view and process documents quickly, online, and in distant branch offices.

3. Give eyes to your mainframe.

A document in proprietary AFP format, which is retrieved from the archive, needs to be delivered on demand and viewed as PDF online in a Web browser.

Using the AFP2web Java Source Development Kit, AFP2web is implemented as a standalone server, satisfying on-demand conversion requests.

Combined with any PDF or TIFF viewer, AFP2web is the ideal AFP viewer for displaying AFP documents.
